The Blood Gas Laboratory was established in 1966 by Dr. Ivan Kirin and Dr. Dimitar Iluchev. In this laboratory have worked consecutively the specialists – Ganka Popova and Dimitrina Spasova, and in 1976 – Violeta Chavdarova. At the end of 1977 it was set up to Blood Gas Diagnostic Centre in the Higher Medical Institute and then blood gas analyzers of Intensive Care Unit and Obstetrics and Gynaecology Clinics were added and the specialists Velichka Papazyan and Delka Shumanska started working in it.
The following systems were consecutively used in this Laboratory: Astrup, ABL1, 2 and 3 by Radiometer, AVL 995 Hb, Nova Biomedical, Oxyhaemometer by Radiometer and Ion-selective Analyzer by AVL. At present oxygen and acid-base state blood analysis is performed at the Laboratory using deep-pictures analysis of blood samples. Between 15 and 20 000 blood analyses are annually performed.
